Family owned and operated since 1953, Sawbill Canoe Outfitters’ original log building had been used for a variety of purposes over the decades. Olson (and architect of record Tom Barbeau barbeauarchitects.com) designed a thorough remodelling and expansion. Through its use of large white pine posts, half-log siding and stone, the building is reminiscent of the traditional North Woods lodges that have all but disappeared from this area. The building’s functions include a main retail store, outfitters, food preparation and storage areas, as well as offices and a grand screened porch in which canoeists are readied for their paddle through Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
